But this intense Russian novel is emasculated by the process, becoming little more than a canter through Raskolnikoff’s murder of the nasty old moneylender and his subsequent moral and spiritual torment. And hardly have we begun to plumb the depths of Raskolnikoff’s agonising (or the teeming stews of St Petersburg) before a burst of Rimsky-Korsakov moves us on to the next episode. But Nigel Anthony’s reading, proceeding at a brisker pace than he might have liked, does serve as a useful introduction to the novel (2 hours 30 minutes).
