| | Crime and Punishment (CSA Tape) ISBN 1901768775 by Fyodor Dostoevsky. read by Nigel Anthony. Abridging books for audio is not always a bad idea, even for the classics. But this intense Russian novel is emasculated by the process, becoming little more than a canter through Raskolnikoffs murder of the nasty old moneylender and his subsequent moral and spiritual torment. And hardly have we begun to plumb the depths of Raskolnikoffs agonising (or the teeming stews of St Petersburg) before a burst of Rimsky-Korsakov moves us on to the next episode. But Nigel Anthonys reading, proceeding at a brisker pace than he might have liked, does serve as a useful introduction to the novel (2 hours 30 minutes).
